Bill Tyler is
relishing his retirement after working since 1969 as an actuary.
"I was more than happy to get out of the corporate world after that
many years," he said. He and his wife,
Jeanne, of nearly 42-years live in Fort Wayne, Ind. and have
3 daughters, Brittney, 39, Hilary, 37 and Leslie, 31. In
December, they are expecting their fourth grandchild. During high school,
Bill says he was shy, the exact opposite he recalls of his twin
sister, Sherry, who he still refers to as the social butterfly.
"She didn't pass on any socializing skills to me at that time," he
says. His shyness did not prevent him from enjoying his high school years. It was a good time for him and he said, "I liked studying and enjoyed just being in school. " Bill says he wasn't much of an athlete but participated in drama and was in several plays. During his senior year, he and Mike Wood watched the basketball team practice every night after school and went to watch them at the tournament that spring. "That whole experience was memorable and lots of fun," he said.Besides, Mike, Tom Leslie was a good friend. Rock 'n roll was
his kind of music back in that day and he still enjoys it. Like so many other classmates, he attended the Friday night dances at "the rec.," otherwise known as the "Y." And like so many others, he suffered from teen angst. "I was shy and introverted and didn't enjoy them as much as I might have," he said. After graduation, Bill went to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He started out in chemistry, changed over to a math major and graduated with a degree in economics. On April 1 of 1967, he and Jeanne married and the next month, on May 1, he received his draft notice. July first, he was off to the Army where he spent the next two years as an enlisted man. Bill was in Viet Nam but says he did not see combat. "I was stationed at army headquarters about 20 miles outside Saigon. It was a relatively secure location and my war experiences were pretty tame," he said. When he returned home, the couple moved to Fort Wayne where Bill worked for Lincoln National Insurance Co. as an actuary in the reinsurance section. He remained there until the company was bought out by Swiss Reinsurance and he retired in 2003. Today, the couple live in Indiana and in Bonita Springs, Fla., where they have a second home. Sherry and her husband also have a place in Florida so the foursome are able to together frequently he says. Bill has gone to a couple of reunions and plans to attend the big 50.
